As an active member within the community, the Houston Athletic Rugby Club (HARC) continues to support local charitable groups.

A big thank you to the Club members who donated and participated in this kind act of giving.

SHARC Coaching Transition

HARC Members, Family, Alumni, and Supporters,

It is time to say farewell to Coach Martin Chalmers, as his time in Texas has come to an end. Coach Chalmers’ on-field resume with the Club has been very impressive during his short tenure.  During Coach Chalmers’ first year with the Club (2012-2013 season), the Women’s side was competing within the Division II conference.  During this season, the HARC Women completed the season by collecting the Division II Texas Cup!  Following this season, the Women took second place in the Red River Rugby Conference, losing just their first game of the season resulting in a Division II berth to the USA Rugby Playoff Round of 8 competitions.   Building on this success, the HARC Women – now known as the SHARCs – took the 2014-2015 season by storm and finished undefeated in league play under Coach Chalmers.  This also resulted in a Division I berth to the National USA Rugby Round of 8 playoffs. They were ultimately ranked 7th in the nation for the 2014-2015 season.

Coach Chalmers also thrived within the Club in off-field activities.  He was often engaged in community service and social events the Club took part in.  On many occasions, he opened up his home for hosting gatherings and events.

The Houston Athletic Rugby Club wishes Coach Martin Chalmers and his family all the best in their transition and new home.  Martin is a pillar of the Club that will be missed and, on behalf of the Club, we are proud to have had Coach Chalmers as part of the organization since the 2012-2013 season.  Coach Chalmers brought an infectious passion and love to the Club and helped to promote a developing Women’s side into Division I playoff contenders.

Transitioning into the coaching role, HARC is pleased to announce that Nicole James will be taking over as the Women’s Head Coach for the 2015-2016 season.  Coach James has been a playing member of HARC since the 2013-2014 season and has been an active leader within the Club.   In a playing role, Coach James has been instrumental in helping the team advance into playoffs during her time with the Club.  She is a level 300 certified coach and will be a welcome addition to the Club’s coaching staff.  Please give a warm HARC welcome to Coach James!

Club President

Men’s Head Coach Named

It is with pleasure that the Houston Athletic Rugby Club announces Edmond Allen as the Men’s Head Coach for the 2015-2016 season. Coach Allen has been a playing member of HARC since the Club’s origination. Coach Allen made his transition from the playing field into coaching starting with HARC 7’s, coaching the Club in this capacity for five years. Subsequently, he then transitioned to Memorial High School and took the team to the Texas state playoffs for the last three years.

As HARC continues to grow, the Club would like to announce the addition of specialized assistant coaches who have also been brought on board this season. Coaches Phil Williams and Jay Robertson will be assisting with player development, critical skills, team selections and specific game situations.

A special thank you is extended to Coach Jason Smith who has been on rotation here in the States from Australia, and has been volunteering his time and service in helping the Club establish new game plans and strategies for the upcoming season. His time with us has come to an end and he will certainly be missed.

Welcome to all the new coaches!

Friendly weekend of rugby.

Both the HARC men and women participated in friendly fixtures this past weekend, each coming off with a win.

The men were hosted by Alamo City in San Antonio.  It was great to have a run against the Alamo City team since both clubs have not had a chance to see each other in the past few years.

Following a rescheduling of a league match against the Dallas Quins, the women traveled up to College Station to pick up a game against Texas A&M.  Stand out performance by new club member Sarah with her two tries (including her conversion on one of them).

The women will be back on league play this weekend at the Houston Sports Park hosting Oklahoma.   The men will kick off their league play in Austin against the Austin Huns on December 5th.
