Jaime Varano Memorial 7’s tournament – CANCELLED.

Regrettably the upcoming Jaime Varano Memorial 7’s tournament which is currently planned for July 30th at the Houston Sports Park is cancelled.
Unfortunately there was not sufficient interest in the event to coordinate a tournament which would provide ample play for participating teams.
Alternative formats were address to allow for interested parties as of current to still get some field time but it would only result in a small round robin type event and not justify the entrance fee and event operating costs.
Although HARC will not be hosting a 7’s tournament this day, we would like to invite all rugby supporters to join in and help send off the Women’s Olympic 7’s team as they head to Rio in search of gold! There will be a send off party held at the Hilton Americas in Downtown Houston from 5:30 to 6:00 pm Saturday July 30th.

Club Presidential Transition – 2016

HARC Friends and Family,

During the past 8 years as Club President, my tenure at the Houston Athletic Rugby Club has been filled with excitement, rewarding challenges, and personal growth. While my playing days have been behind me for some time, it is now time to transition out of the Presidency of HARC Non-Profit organization and focus on business opportunities that will continue the growth and development of both HARC and our great game of rugby in both the local community and across the region.

I am proud to have been part of such an outstanding team and believe that the organization has experienced continued growth and development through organizational practices and Club membership during my time as President. I have had the remarkable opportunity to work with many great individuals who are passionate about the sport of rugby and our great Club. Each and every member, coach, alumni, and supporter has provided valuable insight and influence to guide the Club towards best practices. So much of this input has helped sculpt and shape the Club into what it is today.

I would like to personally announce and welcome President elect Mr.David Yeoman to the role and fully support his nomination. As the Club transitions into new leadership, I plan to continue support the organization where needed. Mr. Yeoman will fully transition into the role by September 1st 2016.

Yours in rugby

Eric Phillips
President – Houston Athletic Rugby Club

The SHARCs Collect Hardware in Austin

The HARC Women, the SHARCs, competed in the Red River Rugby Conference championship this past weekend in Austin Texas.  The event was hosted this year by the Austin Huns.

The women took a victory over a fast Oklahoma Roses team on Saturday seeding them against the Austin Valkyries on Sunday to determine the RRRC Divisional Champion.  During a very wet and rainy contest, the first half proved to be a very tight and closely contested half.  At full time, the Valkyries came out on top claiming a the Division I RRRC Championship Title for the women.

Both Texas teams will advance to Tuscon, AZ for the coming USA Rugby Round of 8 playoffs (Austin as the Division I representative and HARC as the Division II representative) on a path towards the National Championship.

Fifteens Coming to a Close – Summer Activity

Although the competitive fifteens season has comes to a close for the men, there is still plenty of Club Rugby to come this year.  The Women (SHARCs) are still fully engaged with fifteens and are entering into their third consecutive national playoff run starting with this weekends Red River Rugby Conference Championships in Austin.  As the women advance, there may be continued need for the men to come out and assist when appropriate. Stay tuned to communications for additional updates.

Even though our season is nowhere close to being complete, I wanted to say thank you to all the player coaches who stepped in to lend your assistance over the season and personally thank coaches Jason Smith, Jay Robertson, Frasier Bode, Phil Williams, Renee Hodges, Martin Chalmers, Nick James, and Edmond Allen for all your dedication and sacrifice over the past season.  Thank you!

As we begin the transition from Club Fifteens into Club 7’s, I wanted to highlight some coming dates.  These dates (and much more) can also be found on the HARC Calendar Page through the Club website.

Official 7’s training details are still being finalized but the Club will continue its 7’s program for both men and women starting towards the end of May.  Trainings will most likely continue on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and be held from 7-9 pm.

HARC Women Headed to Playoffs

Go Fund Me – HARC Women Playoffs

The Houston Athletic Rugby Club was founded in 1998 and exists today to develop and promote the game of rugby in the Greater Houston Area by developing both club members and the area’s youth players to their full potential as rugby players and citizens.

The HARC Women, known as the SHARCs, have had an exciting and competitive season and are already in preparation for their THIRD consecutive run at the USA Rugby Playoffs! In order to make this happen, the team needs to raise $8K to help offset the travel costs for the trip to Tuscon AZ for the Round of 8 and hopefully on to Denver CO for the National Championships! The SHARCs have worked very hard this season, to get to this point, including augmenting traditional games schedules to include a Sunday game so to gain experience on back to back days of play.

The SHARCs have also worked hard throughout the fall preparing for the potential playoff run and have organized fundraisers to help add to the Clubs general operating budget. However, due to the general location of the events, the Club is not able to fully support all the members we wish to send to put forth the most competitive side.

As a club sport, HARC is funded in part by corporate sponsorship, donations, through the efforts of the individual team members. The Club is effectively sustained throughout the year but do not always have enough funds to play deeper into the post season. We are asking the community for their support and generosity. Our goal is to raise enough money to offset the personal financial impact to the players on this trip and help the growth and future success of our program. Your donation serves as a great way to give back to your community and may be tax-deductible as HARC is a 501C3 non-profit. We graciously accept any help you can offer, and thank you in advance for your generous support.  We also request that donations be made by May 6th for administrative planning.

Donors will emailed with a team photo of thanks with all of the team’s signatures on it for their generosity. A Federal Tax ID number is available upon request.

Thank you in advance for your consideration!
